ELECTRIC VEHICLES : A self-sufficient combination

Mark Reiyner runs the 130-year old Bruichladdich distillery on the remote Hebridean island of Islay. Three pioneering brothers built the distillery in 1881, and they were the first to bring electricity to the island. But that wasn’t all. So ingenious was the brothers’ original design, that the same Victorian machinery is still used to produce whisky today. And now, although there are eight other distilleries on the island, it’s the first and only to produce biodynamic, organic whisky.

Having established a pioneering BioWayste system at the distillery, Reiyner is able to recycle nearly all of the distillery’s waste products – even converting some into biogas to generate electricity. With everything being reused or recycled, he had almost succeeded in accomplishing absolute self-sufficiency for his business. However, Reiyner still had a problem: ‘It was frustrating to be making such strides in being self-sufficient, when my car still needed the most expensive diesel in the UK from the mainland.’

To push his green credentials even further, and to complete his quest for absolute self-sufficiency, Reiyner looked to LEAF. As the leading innovator in green motoring technology, and 2010 World Car of the Year, it was the perfect choice. The Nissan LEAF enables him to drive completely carbon-free, charging his car with the electricity produced by the distillery. And to celebrate the role played by LEAF in completing the cycle of sustainability, Nissan and the Bruichladdich have produced a bespoke run of Nissan LEAF-labelled organic whisky. Sláinte!
