ELECTRIC VEHICLES : The all-electric rally

With an emphasis on fast driving, ruthless agility and competitive spirit, the international e-Miglia rally is a great platform for electric vehicles to showcase their abilities.
It’s the world’s first ‘quiet’ and clean international street rally, designed to ‘show the world how competitive and efficient, as well as dynamic and vital electric mobility is.’ And with 800km of mountainous terrain to cross, the e-Miglia is considered to be Europe’s most challenging event for electric vehicles. Routed through the Alps, this year’s challengers had to complete four daily stages through four countries in central Europe, and Marc De Jong was behind the wheel of the Nissan LEAF.
His blog tracks his progress through the race, and he discusses LEAF’s ability to cope with the demands of its driver and the road. Placed 17th out of 32 competitors, and among the best of family-sized production cars, De Jong was incredibly impressed with the Nissan LEAF’s abilities. Through the Julier Pass he noted how peaceful it was to drive such a quiet, 100% electric vehicle in these beautiful surroundings – he has remarked that during the race ‘the car never let [him] down.’ He recalls that the stretch between St Moritz and Munich was particularly impressive, as he covered over 192km in just 3 hours – with 25km of battery power remaining!
