CITY CARS : Micra - follow the journey of the Micra since 1983
Four generations... more than a quarter of a century... and a whole lot of mileage.
Micra’s European journey began in 1983, and the loveable small car has come a long way since then. Take a look back and explore the history.
The Journey
1983 – The first generation
A year after its Japanese launch, Micra arrives in Europe for the very first time. Known as the March in its home country and throughout Asia, Micra is soon stealing a march on its category rivals.
With popularity rising, more Micra options are introduced over the next decade, including a new 5-door hatchback and turbo models. In 1987, a super-charged turbo Micra is created for motorsport competition, proving a hit with drivers in the Japanese Rally Championship.
Production of this model finally ends in 1992. But it’s proved so reliable that tens of thousands are still on the roads today.
1992 – The second generation
Micra is re-launched featuring softer body-lines and an all-new engine.
Over the next few years, customers are offered more and more options – airbags, anti-lock brakes, power steering, central locking – many never before seen on a small car.
1993 brings an exceptional breakthrough: Micra becomes the first ever Japanese car to win the prestigious European Car of the Year award.
And there’s another milestone in 1998, as Nissan’s UK plant produces its millionth Micra.
2003 – The third generation
Longer, taller and curvier than ever, the brand new Micra features a distinctively eye-catching set of headlamps that extend right to the edges of the front wings.
There are more engines too, including a 1.5l diesel, plus intelligent features, like keyless entry, that will become Micra’s hallmark.
In 2005 the first Micra coupe-convertible is launched. Called Micra C+C, it features truly head-turning design – especially in the limited edition pink model!
2008 – Micra’s 25th birthday. A fantastic achievement that highlights the car’s enduring popularity, celebrated with the release of Micra 25 Special Edition.
2010 – The fourth generation
Unveiled to the world at the Geneva Motor show in March 2010, the latest incarnation of this much loved car promises to be even easier to drive and just as fun as ever.
Here’s to many more years of Micra fun, excitement and adventure!
